Sheriff, state's attorney encourage safe celebrations

<p class="p1">Union County Sheriff Scott Harvel and Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds remind the public to have a safe New Year’s Eve. The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police and municipal police departments will be patrolling for drunk drivers.</p><p class="p1">Harvel and Edmonds said that everyone who will be drinking is reminded to choose a designated driver.</p><p class="p1">First-time DUI offenders are subject to thousands of dollars in fines and court costs, jail time and loss of driver’s license for six months.  </p><p class="p1">Repeat offenders can be subject to up to $25,000 in fines, a felony conviction and prison time.  </p><p class="p1">Harvel and Edmonds shared the following message: "Driving drunk is not worth the consequences.  Have a safe and enjoyable holiday. Don’t drink and drive."</p><p class="p2"> </p><p class="p2"> </p>
