Wreaths Across America event planned at national cemetery
Mound City National Cemetery plans to honor veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 15. A ceremony is planned at 11 a.m.
The Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission Inc. plans to conduct the Wreaths Across America ceremony.
Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all who served for their sacrifices and to teach a younger generation about the cost of freedom.
Specially designed wreaths for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and POWs/MIAs will be placed on memorials during a ceremony coordinated simultaneously with 750 participating locations across the country.
Wreath sponsorships (purchases) are $15 each, and are available until Nov. 30.
In 2016, 1.2 million remembrance wreaths were placed in total across the country – 245,000 of them at Arlington National Cemetery.
Close to a million volunteers participated at 1,228 locations nationwide, with more than 44,000 volunteers laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery.
