River levels falling on Mississippi, Big Muddy; flood warnings continue

As of early this week, flood warnings continued to remain in effect until further notice for the Mississippi and Big Muddy rivers.

The National Weather Service office in Paducah reported on its website that moderate flooding was occurring along the Mississippi River in Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri.

Minor flooding was occurring along the Big Muddy River near Murphysboro.

River levels on the Mississippi and Big Muddy were falling early this week.

The weather service posted the following updates about river flooding:

Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau

At 8 p.m. Monday, May 20, the river’s stage was 40.5 feet. Flood stage is 32.0 feet.

Moderate flooding was in the forecast. The forecast called for the river to continue to fall to a stage of 39.7 feet by Wednesday morning, May 22.

Mississippi River at Thebes

At 8 p.m. Monday, May 20, the river’s stage was 39.0 feet. Flood stage is 33.0 feet.

Moderate flooding was in the forecast. The forecast called for the river to continue to fall to a stage of 38.2 feet by Wednesday morning, May 22.

Big Muddy River near Murphysboro

At 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, the river’s stage was 25.3 feet. Flood stage is 22.0 feet.

Minor flooding was in the forecast. The forecast called for the river to fall to a stage of 24.7 feet by Wednesday morning, May 22.
