Open Mic Night showcases newcomers

It was a night for newcomers at the Shawnee Hills Arts Council’s Second Friday Open Mic on June 14.

Six strings,  four strings, vocal cords and a yarn or two were strung amongst a night of the most performances yet since the beginning of the Anna Arts Center’s monthly event this past March.

A wide musical range was brought to the stage by the younger crowd and included original songs and renditions of many of their favorite artists on acoustic and electric sets, as well as the recently tuned piano.

In between there was comedy and reminiscence on hitchhiking, avoiding unknowing B & E and sneaked ice cream from Cherry Connolly.

It was 11 o’clock before we knew it and there was clamoring for one more song before breaking down for the night.

Those in attendance commented on liking the wider variety of talents and offerings brought by the artists who performed, with each changing the tempo in their own respective ways.

Next month’s Open Mic is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 12 at the arts center at 125 W. Davie St.

Anybody who wants to perform or watch is welcome to come and try it out to support local artists looking for experience playing in front of a crowd.  Admission is $5 and concessions are available.
