King Neptune's burial site gets new marker
The PAST organization of Union County and Crain Funeral Home & Monument Co. announce a new marker at the burial site of famous World War II war bond pig King Neptune.
The new marker replaces a broken one, which was placed after World War II. The King Neptune site is an historical stop that has frequent visitors. The site is located along Illinois Route 146, east of Anna.
The original marker of sandstone had crumbled, so PAST decided that something should be done. They called Bryan Crain for ideas.
The new marker is made of a gray granite base with a black granite insert on which all of the original information is preserved and etched. Instead of the upright monument that was vulnerable to vandalism, the new marker is pillow shaped and low to the ground for security and longevity.
The official King Neptune historical marker site was re-established 30 years ago at the site of the I-57 rest area, but the original site is listed in guide books and is visited by many people. It is the one most visible to the local community.
