Donated items will be used to create art works

Canned food drive

Donated canned food items will be used to create unique art works – and to help feed the hungry, thanks to a unique project which is planned in the community.

The Lick Creek 4-H and Union County Robotics are participating in University of Illinois Extension’s I CAN Construction 4-H competition.

The competition is open to any 4-H club, FFA chapter or community organization.

The Lick Creek 4-H Club and Union County Robotics plan to collect nonperishable canned food at three locations in the community.

Canned food items will be collected at the Kroger store in Anna from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Items will be collected at the Walmart supercenter store in Anna from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.

A collection box also will be available at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna. Food will be collected until Oct. 23.

After the donations have been collected, participants will use the items to create canned art sculptures.

Can creations will be displayed at Shawnee Community College near Ullin Oct. 24-25.

Set up times for the creations are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 24 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Viewing of the creations, and the presentation of awards, are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Awards will include Peoples Choice, most cans used, most creative and most original.

All of the items which are collected will be donated to local food pantries.
