Alligator snapping turtle program planned

The Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center near Cypress plans to host a program about the alligator snapping turtle on Saturday, July 2, at 10 a.m. The center is located at 8885 State Route 37 South.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources natural heritage biologist Scott Ballard is leading a long-term conservation effort to return the state threatened alligator snapper, the world’s largest freshwater turtle, to its documented historical range.

The program will feature more information about Ballard’s project, the natural history of the species and a close-up view of one of the creatures.

For more information, contact the wetlands center at 618-657-2064.
