Meridian defeats Cobden to win Lady Bobcat tournament title
<p class="p1">Host Meridian defeated Cobden 62-42 in the championship game of the Lady Bobcat high school girls’ basketball tournament Saturday, Nov. 21, in Mounds.</p><p class="p1">“We had a terrible shooting quarter and a bunch of turnovers,” Cobden coach Richard Howell said. “It was hard to come back from.”</p><p class="p1">The game was knotted 13-13 in the opening quarter. The Lady Bobcats made a 20-4 run in the second quarter to build a 33-17 halftime advantage. Meridian was ahead 44-27 going into the final period.</p><p class="p1">Taylor Tomazzoli scored 16 points to lead the Appleknockers. Meredith Flamm added 10 points, Alaina Hartline 6, Brooke Bailey 5, Lexi Miller 3 and Gregoria Rafael 2.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Shawnee 35, Joppa 22:</strong> Drew McLane scored 11 points to lead the Lady Reds to the third place win Saturday, Nov. 21.</p><p class="p1">Madi Ellet added 8 points, Autumn McMahan 6, Morgan Stevens 4 and Abbey Livesay and Lexis Charles 2 each.</p><p class="p1">Shawnee led 9-2 after one quarter and 15-14 at the half. The Lady Reds led 23-17 after three periods.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Dongola 48, Century 38:</strong> Mackenzie Prout scored 27 points to lead Dongola to the consolation championship game.</p><p class="p1">Tiffany Shirkey added 8 points, Barb Gorst 6, Karlie Eddleman 3 and Delaney Cummins and Callie Mowery 2 each.</p><p class="p1">Shawnee’s McLane and Cobden’s Tomazzoli were each named to the all-tournament team.</p><p class="p1">In other tourney action throughout the week:</p><p class="p1"><strong>Cobden 39, Shawnee 31:</strong> Bailey and Flamm had 10 points each to lead Cobden to the win.</p><p class="p1">Tomazzoli added 9 points, Hartline 7 and Makynzie Peterman 3. </p><p class="p1">McLane had 16 points to lead the Lady Reds. Stevens added 6 points, McMahan 5 and Livesay and Charles 2 apiece.</p><p class="p1">Cobden led 10-9 after one quarter and was ahead 17-16 at the half. Cobden led 24-23 going into the final period and outscored Shawnee 15-9 in the final quarter.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Shawnee 42, Pope County 36:</strong> McLane scored 23 points to lead the Lady Reds to the opening round win.</p><p class="p1">McMahan added 12 points, Alexis Charles 4, Brittany Abernathey 2 and Katie Charles 1.</p><p class="p1">Shawnee pulled ahead 12-8 after one quarter and 22-20 at the half. The Lady Reds led 35-28 going into the final period.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Cobden 42, Century 39:</strong> Tomazzoli scored 13 points to lead Cobden to the win.</p><p class="p1">Flamm added 11 points, Hartline 10, Bailey 4 and Rafael and Miller 2 apiece.</p><p class="p1">The Appleknockers built a 13-7 first quarter lead and were in front 22-15 at the half. Cobden led 32-23 headed into the final period. Century made a run and outscored the Appleknockers 16-8 in the final period.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Egyptian 37, Dongola 21:</strong> Prout scored 11 points to lead the Lady Demons in the loss.</p><p class="p1">Shirkey added 4 points and Mowery, Eddleman and Cummins each had 2 apiece.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Dongola 31, Egyptian 24:</strong> Prout and Cummins had 9 points apiece to lead Dongola to the win.</p><p class="p1">Mowery added 7 points and Shirkey 6.</p><p class="p1">The Lady Demons led 12-5 after one quarter and 19-10 at the half.</p>
