<p class="p1">Melvin Smith, 83, of Tamms, died at 9:07 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.</p><p class="p1">He was born on May 31, 1932, in Tamms, the son of Robert and Vinna Whitaker Smith Sr.</p><p class="p1">He married Dorothy Newell on June 14, 1952. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2012.</p><p class="p1">He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and he served during the Korean War. He worked in construction for Laborer's Local 773. He was an avid fisherman and liked to hunt and was a retired McDonald's loafer.</p><p class="p1">He is survived by his son, Kenny (Gail) Smith of Tamms; a daughter, Glenda (Mike) Hamilton of Henderson, Kentucky; a sister, Irene Pettit of Villa Ridge; nieces, nephews and other relatives.</p><p class="p1">He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; brothers Ed Smith, George Smith, Ralph Smith and Robert Smith Jr.; and a sister, Maxine Holscher.</p><p class="p1">Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Rev. Buddy Walls officiating. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola, with military honors by area veterans and the Illinois National Guard.</p><p class="p1">To leave online condolences, visit www.crainsonline.com.</p><p class="p1">Crain Funeral Home in Tamms was in charge of arrangements.</p>
