Let’s not forget our veterans

To the editor,

As a resident of Union County, I would like to call attention to an article in The Gazette-Democrat published last week.

It concerns me that anyone would even consider closing the Illinois Veterans Home of Anna. Of course some say that is just a rumor and we shouldn’t worry, for no one would dare close those doors and move the residents up state.

Remember, these are “our veterans’” we are talking about. They deserve to live in this wonderful facility here in our area.

Have you visited any of the residents and seen what wonderful care is given to them by a dedicated staff and caregivers? Take a little time and go see for yourself.

One of the veterans said, “These people must of been hand picked by God to be here to help take care of us.” How true. Indeed, it is an honor to shake hands with the “vets” and let them know we do care, that they are not forgotten.

If you could call them by name and say a few words to them, you would be rewarded with a big smile and then maybe a tear or two. They know what they did to keep our “country” safe and free. They ask us not to forget the ones that were not able to make it back home.

Please, let’s not forget any of them. I can’t put into words what it truly means to be in their presence. “They may be growing old, but they still have hearts of gold.”

It is time for us to stand up and speak out for what is right. Try to attend our county board meetings for the public is welcomed. Let all people know that we in Southern Illinois do care. Please contact anyone you can in Union County or at the state level and yes, even on to Washington. There are petitions that can be signed showing support.

Please come to the county board meeting on Aug. 3 at the Jonesboro courthouse at 4 p.m. We do thank the board for all their hard work. We are proud to have this veterans home in our community and want to be sure to keep it here.

Signed, Guiola Moreland, Anna
