Katie Pearl Levan Gunter

Katie Pearl Levan Gunter, 92, of Red Rock, Texas, and formerly of Cairo, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, in Texas.

Mrs. Gunter was born on April 16, 1917, in Sikeston, Mo., and grew up in Cairo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Msg. Marvin Lindell “Joe” Gunter, with whom she had traveled the world and learning many languages, including Japanese.

She developed a lifelong habit of continued education, taking courses from Shippensburg College in Pennsylvania, the University of Oklahoma at Norman, as well as various schools in Texas.

After retiring from the Defense Department as a systems analyst/computer programmer, she continued working in that profession for the City of Corpus Christi, Texas.

She was a member of American Business Women’s Association, the Eastern Star, Rebekahs and Beta Sigma Psi.

Survivors include a daughter, Jo LeVan Gunter of Red Rock, Austin, Texas; a niece, Ruby Fischer and husband, Bill of Corpus Christi; and nephews Sydney De Jarnette and wife Flo of Reno, Texas, David Hightower and Sonny Hightower.

Many friends and neighbors helped her stay in her home, including Ruby and Bill Fischer, Odie Edge and family, Bill Petitte and family, Brenda Miller and family, Maxine Miller, Bertha Garcia and family, Peggy Brittan, and Grace Devinney.

Interment was at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge.

Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge was in charge of arrangements.
