A-J girls’ soccer team 1-2 at Metro Cup event
The Anna-Jonesboro High School girls’ soccer team opened the season by finishing 1-2 in the Metro Cup at Belleville Saturday, March 20.
In the final match of the day, A-J defeated Gillespie 2-0.
A-J’s Cortni Hicks scored in the 35th minute with an assist from Ashley Kenrick and Timbre Craig.
Kim Mixen scored the second goal for the Lady Wildcats in the 36th minute.
A-J goalkeeper Kat Gerharz recorded her first win with 62 minutes in goal and had one save. Goalkeeper Danyell Hale played the final 18 minutes in goal to preserve the win.
“In the first half of the match, A-J played its best soccer of the season,” A-J soccer head coach Michael Mibb said.
A-J had an 11-1 edge in kicks on goal to Gillespie and led in corner kicks, 8-2.
In the first match of the day, A-J lost 1-0 in double overtime to Freeburg. Goalkeeper Gerharz had 8 saves in 88 minutes of play.
The Lady Wildcats lost their second match of the day 2-0 to Highland’s junior varsity squad. Goalkeeper Gerharz had 3 saves in 80 minutes of play.
A-J is scheduled to play again Monday at Kennett, Mo.
