Hicks helps Quincy win golf tournament

The Quincy University D II women’s golf team had an outstanding performance at the Illinois College Midweek tournament in Jacksonville Wednesday, Sept. 12, afternoon.

After a delay in the release of the final results, the Lady Hawks were declared the champions of the tournament by just two strokes.

On the last hole, sophomore Kayla Martin chipped a tough sand shot onto the green for an easy two-putt.

Martin’s winning shot was led by a well-played round from freshman Cortni Hicks, an Anna-Jonesboro Community High School graduate, which helped lower the Lady Hawks’ team score.

Quincy was unsure of the tournament’s outcome, considering Martin’s group was the last to finish and Illinois College was the clubhouse leader; however, Quincy head coach Nick Myers knew the girls were close.

“We didn’t know where we stood until they posted all of our scores. We were a little nervous because we knew it was close, but when Kayla’s score got posted we got really excited,” said Myers.

After Martin’s score was posted, Illinois College was bumped down to second place, which allowed the Lady Hawks to claim the title.

Hicks led the Lady Hawks with a first place finish to mark her best career finish at Quincy University which landed her as the tournament medalist.  

As for Coach Myers, the finish marked the first time a team had brought home a trophy under his coaching.

“It was a great feeling to take home some hardware for the first time in my career as a coach, but it was a real pleasure helping these young ladies succeed and have something to show for it,” said a happy Myers of the team’s accomplishment.

Athlete of the Week

Cortni Hicks was selected as one of this week’s athletes of the week at Quincy University.

Hicks was honored for her first place finish at the Illinois College Midweek Classic on Sept. 12.
