Herman L. Stokes

Herman L. Stokes, 94, of Lick Creek, died at 1:35 A.M., Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016 at his home.  Herman was born on July 3, 1921 in Buncombe, the son of Matthew and Lucinda (Keller) Stokes.  He married Bonnie Rich on Oct. 22, 1943 in Jackson, Missouri.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Stokes of Lick Creek; two daughters, Jeannie Parr and Carol Watkins, both of Lick Creek; one son, Matt (Donna) Stokes of Lick Creek; four grandchildren, Chandler (Sherri ) Parr, Tim (Kim) Parr, Jennifer (B.J.) Stokes, Ashley (Jeremy) Cookson; 10 great-grandchildren, Chandra Kaye, Zack and Jake Parr, Travis and Brady Woodworth, Clayton Smith, Bella and Gracie Cook, Ryker and Cru Cookson; one niece, Barbara Adams of Anna; other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tim and Lowell Stokes; two sons-in-law, Mike Watkins and P.L. Parr.

He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a WWII veteran.  Herman was a former Union County Commissioner. He served as a past president of the Lick Creek School Board and also a past member of the Anna-Jonesboro High School Board.  Herman was a lifelong farmer and dairy farmer.

Funeral services were at noon, Tuesday Jan. 26, 2016 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Mike Miller officiating.  Interment was in the McGinnis Cemetery with Military rites conducted at the graveside by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455 of the VFW of Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard Military Honors Team of Marion. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church or to the McGinnis Cemetery.  Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
