Hazel Leona Harvell Newell
Hazel Leona Harvell Newell, 94, of Tamms, died at 7:53 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Mrs. Newell was born on Aug. 27, 1914, in Alexander County, the daughter of George Harvell and Osee Crocker Harvell.
Mrs. Newell was a member of the Free Pentecostal Church in Elco and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
Mrs. Newell and her husband owned and operated Newell’s Hardware and Dry Good Store in Ullin, and later owned and operated a trailer park in Bradenton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy Loren Newell, on April 26, 1994; three sisters, Ruby Ice, Viola Twente and Zula Mae Melvin; and two brothers, Harley and Plez Harvell.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Kee of Tamms and Thelma Lucille Welborn of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a sister, Freda Miller of Chaffee, Mo.; a brother, Charles Harvell of Tamms; five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Newell will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, today, at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms with the Rev. Jim McLane officiating.
Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery near Dongola.
