Goreville outscores Wildcats in fourth place game at West Frankfort

<p class="p1">The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team finished in fifth place after a loss to Goreville in Saturday’s fourth place game at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic in high school boys’ basketball Saturday, Jan. 23.</p><p class="p1">A-J’s Dakota Earnhart and Jake Parr were each named to the all-tournament team.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Goreville 61, A-J 46:</strong> The game was tied 16-16 after one quarter when the Blackcats pulled ahead in the fourth place game.</p><p class="p1">Goreville led 27-18 at the half and 44-31 headed into the final period.</p><p class="p1">Earnhart had 20 points and 3 rebounds to lead A-J.</p><p class="p1">Parr added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Sheldon McGrath had 9 points and 3 rebounds. Hunter Garver had 3 points and 4 rebounds. Garrett Nimmo had 3 points and a rebound. Ryan Stark had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Wyatt Smith had 2 rebounds.</p><p class="p1">The Wildcats were 14 of 36 in shot attempts from the floor, 3 of 10 from 3-point range and 11 of 16 from the free throw line.</p><p class="p1">The Blackcats were 20 of 33 in shot attempts from the floor, 3 of 14 from 3-point range and 10 of 17 from the charity stripe.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Eldorado 50, A-J 42:</strong> The Eagles pulled ahead early on their way to the win Friday, Jan. 22.</p><p class="p1">Eldorado led 16-10 after one quarter and 31-19 at the half. The Wildcats fought back to pull to 38-33 headed into the final period.</p><p class="p1">Earnhart had 10 points and 4 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.</p><p class="p1">Garver had 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 2 rebounds. Parr had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Ryan Stark had 8 points. McGrath had 7 points. Nimmo had 4 points and 2 rebounds. Smith had a point and 4 rebounds.</p><p class="p1">The Wildcats were 13 of 32 in shot attempts from the floor, 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 18 of 22 from the free throw line.</p><p class="p1">The Eagles were 11 of 22 in shot attempts from the floor, 5 of 13 from 3-point range and 7 of 11 from the charity stripe.</p><p class="p1"><strong>Herrin 58, A-J 44:</strong> A-J let a first half lead slip away in the loss in the Classic Wednesday, Jan. 20.</p><p class="p1">The game was knotted 18-18 after one quarter and the Wildcats pulled ahead 29-27 at the half. A-J trailed 44-36 headed into the final period and was outscored 17-7 down the stretch.</p><p class="p1">Parr had 13 points and 4 rebounds to lead A-J. Garver added 9 points and a rebound. Ryan Stark had 7 points. Earnhart had 6 points and 5 rebounds. McGrath had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Nimmo had 3 points and 3 rebounds.</p><p class="p1">A-J was 14 of 31 in shot attempts from the field, 3 of 9 from 3-point range and 7 of 11 from the free throw line.</p><p class="p1">The Tigers were 12 of 20 in shot attempts from the floor, 9 of 28 from 3-point range and 4 of 11 from the charity stripe.</p><p class="p1">A-J, 12-9 overall, is scheduled to be at home Friday against Nashville and Saturday at home against West Frankfort.</p>
