Goreville outscores Cobden for SEC title

Pitcher Nick Andros scattered 4 hits in leading Goreville to an 8-3 win over Cobden for the South Egyptian Conference high school baseball tournament championship at Shawnee College near Ullin Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Andros recorded 16 strikeouts.

Alex Sweitzer and Blake Wiggs pitched in the loss.

Sweitzer pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed 3 hits to go with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Wiggs pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed 4 hits to go with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Sweitzer and Wiggs were each 2-for-4 at the plate for the Appleknockers.

Cobden 6, Shawnee 5: Steve Draper was 3-for-3 to lead Cobden over Shawnee in the semifinals earlier Wednesday.

Joe Eck was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Chris Solomon was 1-for-3. Aaron Cerny was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sweitzer was 1-for-4.

Ty McMahan was 4-for-4 to lead the Redskins. Aaron Lambdin was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Anthony Crane was 2-for-5.

Tyler Brant and Gayvn Ellet were each 1-for-3. Tyler Glidewell  was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kyle Stevens was 1-for-4. Greg Smith was 1-for-5 with 2 RBIs.  Adam Pennington was 1-for-5.

Sweitzer and Draper combined on the win.

Sweitzer pitched an inning and allowed 5 hits to go with no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Draper pitched 7 innings and allowed 10 hits to go with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Greg Smith and Glidewell pitched in the loss. Smith pitched 6 innings and allowed 6 hits to go with a walk and 6 strikeouts.

Glidewell pitched 1 1/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit to go with no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Cobden finished the fall season 10-3 overall.

“I thought we ended up pretty well,” Cobden coach Blayne Smith said.
