Derek Winans earns hall of fame honors

Former Shawnee High School standout athlete Derek Winans was  inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Saturday, April 26, in a cermony at Illinois State University in Normal.

His family, former high school coach Mike Hanson and former teammates Cory Barker, Chad Otten and Casey Otten also attended the ceremony.

Winans played collegiate basketball for Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

While at SEMO he set school records in career three-pointers with 219 and career starts with 101. Both records held up until 2013. 

He is currently fifth all-time in scoring with 1,505 points, third in field goals made, second in three-pointers made and second in steals.

Winans was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American basketball team two years in a row.

After red-shirting the 2000-2001 season (his first year), he led the Redhawks in scoring for the next three seasons and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2002.

He earned first-team honors as a senior and was a second-team selection his junior year.

Winans was notified in December that he was selected.
