Community members came together last Friday evening to voice their appreciation to Don Denny of Anna for his service as a member of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

A reception was held in Denny's honor last Friday evening at the Brickhouse Grill in downtown Anna.

Denny served on the county board from 2008 to 2014. He ended his term serving as chairman of the county board.

In recognition of his six years of service, Denny was presented with a framed image of Union County's new courthouse in Jonesboro. The presentation was made by current county board vice chairman Max Miller.

The gift also included a special message to Denny which read:

"For decades to come, the legacy of Don Denny will be felt in the communities of Union County.

"Your hard work and dedication have impacted our county’s government, business community and volunteer organizations in positive and inspirational ways. The new Union County Courthouse will long stand as a testament to the faith and confidence you instilled in the residents of Union County.

"On behalf of the commissioners and elected officials of Union County, thank you for your years of devoted service."

Denny said that construction of a new county courthouse was one of the major achievements recorded during his service as a commissioner.

The new building replaced an aging structure. Parts of the old courthouse dated to the 1850s.

Denny praised work done by a committee of community members who supported the effort to bring a new courthouse to the county.

"Without the committee, we wouldn't have got it done," Denny said about the courthouse project.

The effort included the passage of a local sales tax to fund the construction of the new facility.

Highlights of his six years as a commissioner also included working to pay off county debt – and staying out of debt – as well as maintaining a budget which was in the black.

Denny said that while he does miss service as a commissioner, he has plenty to keep him busy, including work on the family farm and watching basketball games involving his children and grandchildren.
