Cobden American Legion Junior team’s season ends at tourney
Cobden let a 4-2 lead slip away in a 5-4 loss to host Goreville in the American Legion 25th District Junior Baseball Tournament Saturday, July 16.
Cobden out-hit Goreville 9-7 in the loss.
Clayton Flamm, Dylan Duty, Bayden Ditterline and Cody Wieseman were each 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Cobden. Josh Burgess was 1-for-3.
Burgess and John Russell pitched in the loss. Burgess pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed 7 hits to go with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Russell pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Cobden 7, Marion 6:
Zane Nance was 2-for-3 to lead Cobden in the tournament win at Goreville in the win Friday, July 15.
Russell was 2-for-4. Flamm was 1-for-2. Trevor Middleton was 1-for-3.
Ditterline, Middleton and Russell pitched in the win. Ditterline pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed 5 hits to go with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts. Middleton pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed a hit to go with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. Russell pitched 2/3 of an inning.
Metropolis 3, Cobden 1:
Host Cobden stranded 8 and had 3 errors in the first round home loss Thursday, July 14. Bryce Reynolds and Burgess were 1-for-2 to lead the hitting. Ditterline and Wieseman were each 1-for-3. Russell was 1-for-4.
Russell was the losing pitcher, scattering 8 hits to go with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
Cobden finished its season at 9-8 overall.
“We learned a lot as a team and grew up a lot this summer,” Cobden coach Dana Pearson said.
The team’s players will be off a couple of weeks before the high school season begins.
