Bald Knob projects planned

<p class="p1">Plans for major improvements and growth are in the works for a Union County landmark. The plans for the future of the Cross of Peace on Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass were announced at a press conference which was held on New Year's Day. </p><p class="p1">The press conference was held during the noon hour in the welcome center at the cross.</p><p class="p1">Four members of the Cross of Peace board were on hand to share details about the developments.</p><p class="p1">The plans include property acquisition, welcome center and sightline improvements and the hiring of an executive director.</p><p class="p1">"We're excited about it," Cross of Peace board vice chairman Ron Stork of Sparta said prior to the start of the press conference.</p><p class="p1">Board chairman Ralph Brandon of Carterville opened the press conference by announcing the acquisition of nearly 12 acres of property which had become available adjacent to the grounds on which the Cross of Peace is located. The landmark stands on about 22 acres.</p><p class="p1">"The future of the cross is far greater than its past," Brandon said after he announced the acquisition of the property, which cost $78,000. He predicted that "future generations will be grateful" for the board's approval of the purchase of the land.</p><p class="p1">The additional property could be utilized for development of a camping site or as a retreat center. Plans have not been finalized.</p><p class="p1">Brandon also took time at the press conference to pay tribute to former board members who had done so much work in support of the Cross of Peace.</p><p class="p1">Board vice chairman Stork announced plans for improvements at the welcome center, which include remodeling and installation of deck.</p><p class="p1">"We are excited about the continuation of the progress of the cross," Stork said. He noted that the deck, located outside the welcome center, would allows visitors another opportunity to experience the "beautiful view" from atop Bald Knob Mountain.</p><p class="p1">Stork said the board hopes to have the work at the welcome center completed in time for the 2015 Blessing of the Bikes event, which is scheduled for April 26.</p><p class="p1">Stork said plans also are being developed to improve sightlines at the cross with the removal of utility poles.  </p><p class="p1">Board secretary Steve McKeown of Herrin announced plans for the hiring of a part-time executive director who will work to ensure the growing vision of the Cross of Peace and will serve as a primary representative and spokesperson for the landmark. The hiring would be a first for the Cross of Peace.</p><p class="p1">McKeown said the board anticipates that the executive would work for about 20 hours a week and would be paid in the range of $15,000 to $22,000 a year.</p><p class="p1">The board hopes to have hired an executive director by the time of its annual meeting on Feb. 10.</p>
