Wildcats set to face Sparta Friday night
The Sparta High School football team will travel to Anna-Jonesboro for the Wildcats’ Senior Night Friday, Oct. 12.
The Bulldogs are 1-6 and 0-4 in Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division action after losing 49-26 to Carterville last Friday. Their lone win this year was over Benton, 1-6, A-J’s final season opponent next week.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna.
“They’re struggling,” A-J coach Brett Detering said. “They’ve given up a decent number of game points. But, if we play like we have the last five games, things will take care of themselves.”
The Wildcats are on a 5-0 winning streak after losing their first two games of the season.
Junior Carlos Keen, 5-10, 183 pounds, quarterbacks the Bulldogs.
His top running back threats are both juniors in Tony Williams, 5-10, 178 pounds, and Kerry Harris, 6-4, 200 pounds.
The top offensive linemen are seniors Nick Goddard, 6-1, 285 pounds, Christian Gleghorn, 6-0, 185 pounds, and juniors Brady Vallett, 6-2, 245 pounds, and Haydon Baue, 5-11, 234 pounds.
The top defenders are seniors Goddard, Rodney Anderson, 6-1, 185 pounds, and juniors Keen, Isaac Evans, 5-7, 220 pounds, and Brian Williams, 6-1, 310 pounds
Detering said he doesn’t want his team letting up and looking past the Bulldogs.
“You never know, nothing is a foregone conclusion,” he said. “Our goal is to go undefeated in the conference with back to back championships and we’re right there.”
A win for the Wildcats will ensure them of the conference championship as well a a first-round playoff game.
