Wildcats score three wins, take third at Goreville Tournament

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team finished 3-2 to take third place at last week’s Goreville Invitational Tournament.

A-J’s Zach Overstreet and Blake Pena were named to the all-tournament team.

A-J 65, Johnston City 50: Overstreet led the way with 18 points and 2 rebounds in the final game A-J played at the tournament. The game was played Saturday, Dec. 7.

Noah McFarland added 11 points and 5 rebounds for A-J. Damareon Faust had 8 points and 5 rebounds. 

Ta’Kevon Williford had 6 points and 5 rebounds. Maddox Thorpe had 5 points and 3 rebounds. Juan Valencia had 4 points and 2 rebounds. 

Pena had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Laighton Mixen had 4 points. Landon Trammel had 3 points. Nate Belcher had 2 points and a rebound.

The Wildcats were 17 of 33 in shot attempts from the field, 7 of 16 from 3-point range and 10 of 10 from the free throw line.

The Indians were 13 of 34 in shot attempts from the floor, 6 of 18 from 3-point range and 6 of 11 from the free throw line.

Goreville 61, A-J 51: In a game that featured 50 fouls and 68 free throw attempts, the host Blackcats came out on top earlier on Saturday.

Goreville was 23 of 43 from the free throw line and A-J was 16 of 26 from the stripe.

The host Blackcats led 20-4 after one quarter and 30-21 at the half. A-J pulled to 43-37 going into the final quarter. 

The Wildcats fought back to tie the game 33-33 and pulled ahead 35-33 in the third quarter and were ahead 51-50 in the final quarter before Goreville went on a run. 

Pena had 17 points and 3 rebounds to lead A-J.

Overstreet added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Valencia had 7 points and a rebound. 

McFarland had 7 points and 2 rebounds. Faust had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Williford had 4 points and 2 rebounds.

A-J was 13 of 32 in shot attempts from the floor and 3 of 18 from 3-point range.

Goreville was 13 of 23 in shot attempts from the floor and 4 of 15 from 3-point range.

Benton 45, A-J 25: The Rangers pulled ahead 14-6 after one quarter and held on for the tournament win Friday, December 6.

Pena had 11 points and 5 rebounds for A-J.

Valencia had 5 points and 3 rebounds. Faust had 3 points and 3 rebounds. 

Overstreet had 2 points and 2 rebounds. McFarland had 2 points and a rebound. Mixen had 2 points.

A-J was 7 of 24 in shot attempts from the floor, 2 of 13 from 3-point range and 5 of 7 from the charity stripe.

The Rangers were 12 of 27 in shot attempts from the field, 6 of 12 from 3-point range and 3 of 8 from the free throw line.

A-J 52, Hamilton County 34: The Wildcats took over in the second quarter on their way to the win at the tourney Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Overstreet led the way with 13 points and 4 rebounds.

Williford had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Pena had 10 points and a rebound. 

McFarland had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Valencia had 6 points and a rebound. 

Faust had 4 points and 2 rebounds. Landon Trammel had 2 points and 2 rebounds. 

A-J was 19 of 41 in shot attempts from the floor, 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 5 of 10 from the free throw line.

Hamilton County was 11 of 31 in shot attempts from the floor, 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 6 of 11 from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play again at Nashville Friday and at Cobden Saturday.
