Wildcats edge Cobden 62-58 in match-up of Union County rivals

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team split in recent action.

A-J 62, Cobden 58: With 11 seconds remaining, the Wildcats’ Blake Pena made a layup and after a missed Cobden shot and  a rebound, teammate Noah McFarland was fouled and made both free throws to lift A-J to the win over Union County rival Cobden Saturday, Dec. 8.

The teams exchanged leads throughout the game. 

Tyler Smith led the Wildcats with 18 points and 5 rebounds.

Pena added 15 points and a rebound. McFarland had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Carson Reynolds had 9 points and a rebound. Nate Belcher had 4 points. Cameron Tweedy had 3 points and 4 rebounds. Zach Overstreet had 3 points and a rebound.

Noah Franklin had 30 points and 6 rebounds to lead Cobden. Joe Brumleve added 12 points and 3 rebounds. Dylan Lewey had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Zane Nance had 5 points and 3 rebounds.

A-J was 17 of 27 in shot attempts from the floor, 6 of 21 from 3-point range and 10 of 20 from the free throw line.

Cobden was 20 of 30 in shot attempts from the floor, 3 of 9 from 3-point range and 9 of 11 from the charity stripe. 

Nashville 64, A-J 32: The host Hornets pulled ahead early on their way to the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division win Friday, Dec. 7.

McFarland had 7 points and a rebound to lead the Wildcats. Smith had 7 points. Pena and Tweedy added points 6 apiece and a rebound each. Reynolds had 5 points and a rebound. Ta’Kevon Williford had 1 point and a rebound.

A-J was 8 of 16 in shot attempts from the floor, 4 of 9 from 3-point range and 4 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Hornets were 16 of 21 in shot attempts from the floor, 7 of 17 from 3-point range and 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.

A-J, 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference, is scheduled to play Friday at Carterville and Saturday at Massac County.
