Nashville edges A-J in tie-breaker to win Mississippi golf title

Lasley earns medalist honors

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ golf team was edged by Nashville in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Mississippi Division championship at the Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center in Carbondale Thursday, Sept. 27.

Both teams finished with a score of 346. The tie-breaker was decided by the 5th place scorer on each team.

“It’s been a good run,” A-J coach Brandon Bierstedt said. “We’re pretty green, but we’re getting experience.”

This was Nashville’s 10th consecutive Mississippi Division title.

A-J’s Luke Lasley won medalist honors with a score of 74.

“Two of the last three years we’ve won medalist honors,” Bierstedt noted.

Two other Wildcat golfer’s finished among the top 10 to earn all-conference honors. Carson Reynolds finished No. 3 with a score of 82 and teammate Peter Hauser finished No. 6 with 90. 

The other A-J golfers scoring were Trent Mason 100, Ayden Bailey 108 and Dylan Holderfield 129.

Bierstedt said with the large number of freshmen competing on the team this season, the Wildcats could make some noise in the near future.

Marion 165, Carbondale 170 and A-J 177: Lasley scored 40 to lead A-J to close out the regular season at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale Monday, Sept. 24.

Reynolds was next for A-J with 42, followed by Hauser 44, Mason 51 and Holderfield and Bailey with 55 apiece. 

The A-J  boys, 12-5, were scheduled to compete Tuesday at the Class 1A regional at the Jackson County Country Club in Murphysboro.
