A-J scores wins over Vienna, Century
The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team won a pair of non-conference games in recent action.
“It was a good week all around,” A-J coach Mike Chamness said. “We’re playing pretty well right now.”
A-J 63, Vienna 58: The visiting Wildcats pulled ahead early and held on for the win Saturday, Jan. 12.
Tyler Smith scored 18 points and had 4 rebounds to lead A-J.
Noah McFarland had 15 points and 5 rebounds. Blake Pena had 13 points and 3 rebounds.
Cameron Tweedy had 9 points and 3 rebounds. Carson Reynolds had 5 points. Zach Overstreet had 3 points and 3 rebounds.
A-J was 16 of 25 from the floor, 6 of 12 from 3-point range and 13 of 23 from the free throw line. The Wildcats were 7 of 18 from the free throw line in the final quarter.
The Eagles were 21 of 34 in shot attempts from the field, 2 of 21 from 3-point range and 10 of 18 from the charity stripe.
A-J 74, Century 42: Reynolds scored 17 points to lead the host Wildcats to the non-conference win Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Smith added 12 points and 6 rebounds for A-J. McFarland had 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Pena had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Conner Jerolds had 8 points and a rebound. Tweedy had 6 points and 2 rebounds.
Overstreet had 5 points and a rebound. Ta’Kevon Williford had 3 points and a rebound.
Maddox Thorpe had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Nate Belcher had 2 points and 4 rebounds. Nate Baggott added 2 points.
A-J was 20 of 35 in shot attempts from the floor, 9 of 25 from 3-point range and 7 of 10 from the free throw line.
The Centurions were 6 of 13 in shot attempts from the floor, 10 of 28 from 3-point range and 0 of 1 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats’ home game Friday, Jan. 11, with Sparta was cancelled because of inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled at A-J for Tuesday, Feb. 5.
A-J, 5-11, plays this week in the West Frankfort Tournament in a pool with Marion, Herrin and Cairo.
“This week is going to be a big week for us,” Chamness said. “It’s always a good tournament. We needed those two wins going in.”
