A-J hosts Benton for Senior Night game

The Benton High School football team was defeated for the first time this season when it fell to Murphysboro by a score of 41-0.

The Rangers, 7-1, will travel to Anna-Jonesboro, 2-6, to play at The Pit on Senior Night to close out the regular season.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. and will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna.

“I’ve watched the game film and I think Murphysboro is the best team we’ve seen,” A-J coach Brett Detering said. “Murphysboro scored twice before Benton even touched the ball.”

Sophomore Keegan Glover is the Rangers’ quarterback. Junior Ira Peach is a top down field target.

The top running back for Benton is senior Tyler Butler. Others in the backfield are seniors Gage Harmon, Christopher Kneezle and Brantley Reed.

On the offensive line are seniors Garrett Cardwell, Brent Prince, Hunter Roberts and Logan Williams.

The Ranger’s defense is built around seniors Peyton Bayless, Butler, Trey Hosick, Brendan Minor and junior Peyton Swigonski, who led the team in tackles last season.

“It will be our seniors last chance for them,” Detering said. “Most kids’ high school (football) career is over after this. They want to play a good game. We have to play well for four quarters instead of a half. It will be a challenge for us.”

The season concludes for the Wildcats with this week’s game.

“Nine weeks go by pretty quickly,” Detering said
