A-J to host Carterville for homecoming game
The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team is scheduled to host Carterville Friday night, Sept. 27, in the Wildcats’ 2019 homecoming game.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna.
Carterville enters the game with an 0-4 record after a 49-19 loss to Du Quoin last Friday night.
A-J coach Brett Detering said the Lions’ four losses have been to good football teams. The Wildcats will come into the game at 1-3.
“I think we’re similar” Carterville coach Brett Diel said about his team and the Wildcats. “Like them, we’re pretty young, too.”
The Lions switch off at the quarterback position with junior Elijah Downen and senior Carson Pearson.
One of the top receivers for the Lions is junior Lance Thomas.
In the backfield are juniors Preston Sumner and Nick Brown and senior Rafe Tuttle.
“We’re primarily a running team,” Diel said, who added that his team also will pass the ball.
Key offensive linemen for Carterville are juniors Trevor Stewart, Luke Smolak and Jarret Glenn.
Top defensive threats are Stewart, senior Carson Pearson, junior Bryce Anderson, and sophomores Ivan Jones and Trevor Stewart.
