A-J golf season to open with invitational event

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School golf season is scheduled to tee off for the start of the fall sports season this weekend.

The Wildcat boys’ golf team is scheduled to host the A-J Invitational on Saturday at the Union County Country Club course in Anna Saturday. A shotgun start is set for 8:30 a.m.

Teams which are slated to compete include Benton, Carterville, Chester, Trico, Goreville, Hamilton County, Herrin, Harrisburg, Marion, Massac County, Murphysboro, Nashville. Steeleville, Vienna, West Frankfort and the host Wildcats.

A-J golf coach Brandon Bierstedt is counting on three players to build a successful season around for 2016.

“With three leaders, we’re hoping to have an above .500 season,” he said. “Hopefully, they will mold the rest of our young kids into good players.”

The three leaders he’s counting on are seniors Aidan Frick and Colton Lannom and junior Levi Hall.

Other members vying for playing time are juniors Andrew Ury, Jax Watkins, Justyn Harvel, Dawson Pearl, Aiden Bass and Nolan Knupp, sophomore Carson Reynolds and freshman Peter Houser.

A-J Girls’ Golf Team

The A-J girls’ golf team returns six of its top seven players from last season to build around for 2016.

“Our seniors have played together the last four years,” Bierstedt said. “Hopefully, team wise, we should be able to contend in the conference and advance through the regional and sectional.”

The four seniors he’s counting on are Meghan Smith, Tanner Stadelbacher, Chelsea Reiner and Hailley Abernathy.

The lone junior is Connar Hadley. Sophomores vying for playing time are Emma Ray, Chloe Gamber, Jenna Hammer, Britni Helton and Sadie Carwyle and freshmen hopefuls include Madison Goins, Hannah Hileman, Sydnie Ralls and Tobie Treece.

The A-J girls are scheduled to open their season at home Monday, Aug. 22, against Cape Notre Dame.
