An up-close look at the Mississippi River in Grand Tower during a visit last Friday afternoon.A view of the Ohio River from a vantage point at Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis.

A veritable potpourri of musings...

Please read this...

Once again this week, we’re offering a little bit of this...a little bit of that...a veritable potpourri of the writer’s musings, adventures and other things to waste your valuable time...

Here we go...

Look...up in the sky...it was a bird...nope...it was a plane...nope...Superman? Don’t think so.

While on my daily walkabout Monday evening, I just happened to look up at the eastern sky. I wanted to see if the moon was on display as brightly as it had been Sunday night.

Didn’t see the moon. I did see a spot of light moving across the sky, from the northwest to the southeast. UFO? They seem to be quite popular these days. Chinese weather balloon? Haven’t seen one of those overhead since last winter. What I saw may have been the International Space Station. I found something on the internet which suggested that such a thing was possible. And, if it was on the internet, it had to be true...

Moving right along...

Well, I got to see her Sunday night on the television. You know who I’m talking about. That famous young woman and entertainer who has been connected recently with a player on the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs were playing the New York Jets in Sunday night’s big football game. While the game was a pretty big deal, the famous young woman’s attendance at the game was an even bigger deal. I suggested to The Other Half that we needed to watch the game just so we could catch a glimpse of her. I think The Other Half thought I was silly.

I watched for a while. And I actually got to see her. Oh, I watched the game, too. And with all of this being said, I will never, never, ever, ever write about this again...

Meanwhile...

Go, Browns. Um, make that Go, Orioles.

Major League Baseball has wrapped up its regular season for 2023.

For those of us who are fans of the St. Louis Cardinals, the season pretty much came to an end sometime back in the spring. A 19-2 football score shellacking late last week by the Cincinnati Reds over the Birds on the Bat pretty much summed up what can best be described as a season of misery.

The Cardinals won’t be playing baseball in October this year, which is disappointing. The Cubs won’t be playing in October, either. We’ll just leave that at that.

There is a bit of a St. Louis connection to baseball’s playoff season. The Baltimore Orioles are playing in the postseason. Long, long, long ago, the Baltimore Orioles were in St. Louis, where they were called the Browns.

Meanwhile...

Yours truly traveled something like 700 or 800 miles on various adventures last week. The adventures took me to Bardstown, Kentucky, where I spent some time renewing acquaintances with Stephen Foster.

Visits also were made last week to Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis and to Grand Tower. I paid a visit to Grand Tower to see how low the water level was on the Mississippi River. The river was indeed low. Not as low as in 2022. I did walk to the river’s edge and dipped a hand in the water. Just because.

We’ll close with yet another shameless plug this week...A book sale is coming up this weekend at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna...Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The chill of autumn and winter are on the way. To get ready for a cold winter night, head to the book sale, find yourself a treasure and make to plans to curl up under your favorite old quilt...

That’s all for now...
