Sue (Vick) LaBruyere

Sue (Vick) LaBruyere, 84, of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, April 9, 2020, at the home of her daughter in O’Fallon, Mo.

Born Margaret Sue Vick on March 20, 1936, in Cape Girardeau, she was the daughter of Russell Caldwell Vick and Margaret Lucille (Sams) Vick.

She earned her master’s degree in education and counseling from Southeast Missouri State University. 

She taught for 31 years at Chaffee High School and then at Shawnee High School, retiring in 1999.  She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa (Teachers Sorority) and the Retired Teachers Association.  

As a member of Joseph Vick Family of America, she was passionate about genealogy and family history.  

She was a member and past secretary of the DAR Nancy Hunter chapter, the Cape County Genealogy Society, the Abbey Road Church Genealogy Class, the State of Missouri Historical Society, the Committee for DAR School and  the River Heritage Museum.  

She was the representative for the Vick Cemetery to the Illinois Cemetery & Funeral Home Association.  

She was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church, and also worshipped at Kornthal Historic Church.  She was a member of Bridge Club, SOS, the Hand & Foot card club and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.  

Survivors include her daughter, Terri Winham of O’Fallon, Mo.; son Gary Sullivan LaBruyere (Stephanie Fassett) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; grandson Kyle Vick Loy; granddaughter Paddie LaBruyere; seven step-great-grandchildren; brother Bruce (Sherry) Vick of McClure; niece Renee (Steve) Brown; nephews Tim Vick and Todd (Crystal) Vick; great-niece Reagan Brown; great-nephew Hayden Vick; great-nieces Emma and Ava Vick; cousins and other relatives and many friends.  

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, William L. Winham Jr.; and great-nephew Dylan Vick.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.  

Funeral services for Sue (Vick) LaBruyere will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at  the funeral home, with Bill Littrell and the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating.  Eulogy will be by Greg Shambo. A DAR remembrance by the Nancy Hunter Chapter will take place during the service.   

Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery near Dongola.  

A Beta Sigma Phi service will precede the service at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials can be made to Kornthal Historic Church or to St. John’s Cemetery.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
