Ruth Evangeline Aaron

Ruth Evangelin Aaron, 103, of Urbana died at 6:09 p.m. on May 1, 2017, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Casper Cemetery near Anna.

She was born in Anna on Jan. 26, 1914, the daughter of John Henry and Sarah Jane Campbell Sweet. They preceded her in death.

On March 14, 1931, she married James Allen Aaron, who was born on February 26, 1913, in Jonesboro and was a longtime employee of AT&T and Western Union. 

Ruth and James celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on March 14, 2006, before his death on Sept. 19, 2006. 

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Catherine Long and Stella Agnes White; three brothers, John Richard Sweet, Carl Jackson Sweet and Rolla Thomas Sweet (who died in infancy); and one grandchild, Curtis Wade Garrett.

She is survived by her son, Jack Allen Aaron of Bristol, Va., and daughter Lawana Ruth Garrett of Loveland, Colo. Her granddaughter, Gaye Lynn Steadman (Alexander), great-granddaughter, Roselyn of Penrose, Colo.; grandson Darrell Garrett and great-grandchildren, Helena and Sarah of Boise, Idaho, and her grandson, Kenneth Garrett of Fort Collins, Colo. also survive her.

She graduated from Illinois Commercial College on Aug. 8, 1952, and was a bookkeeper/teller for University Savings & Loan, a bookkeeper for 1st Savings & Loan and also Keck Furniture.

She was of Christian faith and a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Savoy. She was also a member of Eastern Star. 

For many years, Ruth and James wintered in Holiday Park in Northport, Fla. During her last few years, she resided in Canterbury Ridge Assisted Living of Urbana.

She has lived through the more than tripling of the world population and remembered as a child the World War I veterans coming home with all of their injuries, struggling up the road as well as the influenza epidemic, when neighbors would leave food on the porch and then leave quickly.
