Robert Calvin Niemi ‘Cal’
Robert Calvin Niemi “Cal” died on July 20, 2024, at the age of 65.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1958, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Robert “Bob” and Marian “Betsy” Niemi.
He married Marci Connell on Aug. 13, 1988, at St. Mary’s Church in Mound City.
He is survived by his wife, Marci Niemi; his two sons, James Trevor (Nadine) Niemi and Robert Tyler Niemi; his sister, Dale Kostakos; grandchildren Amanda Lynn, Anabelle Marie “Bella” and James Calvin Niemi and Austin Glenzinski; as well as many other loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Niemi.
He grew up with his two siblings in a lively and adventurous household. Their father’s successful career as an auto executive in marketing led the family to live in various places, including Florida, giving Cal a childhood full of rich experiences and fond memories.
He always had a passion for radio, music, instruments and the recording process. His love for music continued to resonate throughout his life. His enthusiasm for music was contagious, inspiring his children, who also play various instruments.
He started his career as a cable TV line technician and often shared stories about working in the scorching Texas heat and the freezing Chicago winters. Eventually, he found his true calling in software engineering, where he discovered a deep love for programming and thrived in this new field.
He was a devoted husband to Marci and a loving father to his two sons and a doting Pops to the grandchildren. He was a dedicated family man, always providing for his loved ones and ensuring they felt supported and cared for.
His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. His passion for life, music, and programming, along with his unwavering love for his family, leaves a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed but always remembered with love and admiration.
