Richard J. Cerny

Richard J. Cerny, 86, of Cobden, died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at his home. 

He was born on Feb. 2, 1932, in Cobden, the son of John M. and Elizabeth Bigler Cerny.  

He married Jo Gotta on May 14, 1966, in Centralia.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jo Cerny of Cobden; daughters Tina (Steve) Pedrotty of Hunt Valley, Md., and Teresa (Rich) Koenig of Pullman, Wash.; a son, Eric (Liesa) Cerny of Chesterfield, Mo.; grandchildren Madison Pedrotty, Dominic Pedrotty, Nicholas Koenig, Maria Cerny, Kate Cerny and Sarah Cerny; and sisters Catherine (Norman) Gibbs of Cobden and Dorothy Zinn of Breese.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by three brothers, Lawrence, Norbert and Hugh Cerny.

Richard was a man of faith who was devoted to his family. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden.  

He had a passion for farming, dedicating his life to the family farm on which he was born.  He felt fortunate that he could spread his love for agriculture through growing plants for local farmers until a few days before his death.  

Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

Funeral Mass for Richard J. Cerny was at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden, with Monsignor David Darin officiating.  

Interment was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cobden. Graveside military rites were conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard funeral honor team of Marion.

Memorials can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
