Reverend Federico C. Higuera

Rev. Federico C. Higuera, 77, of Anna, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. 

He was born on March 4, 1941, in Mexico City, Mexico, the son of Federico Higuera Fernandez and Elena Vidal Ortiz.

Survivors include his sister, Susana Higuera Vidal of Mexico City, Mexico; nieces and nephews Marissa, Gonzalo, Susana, Ana, Martha, Antonio, Lorena, Pablo, Fernando, Arturo, Maria, Jose and Francisco Higuera; great-nieces and nephews Mariana, Elena, Justin, Montse, Martin, Maite, Jade, Francisco, Ximena, Victor, Emilia, Brenda, Iker, Valeria, Anthony, Camila and Fernando Higuera; great-great-niece and nephew Isabel and Jack Higuera; other family and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers Jaime Fernando Higuera and Gonzalo Arturo Higuera. 

Rev. Higuera began his service with the church as a deacon. During that time he was actively involved in Hispanic ministries throughout Southern Illinois. 

He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on June 5, 1982. That same year, he became the associate pastor of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Cahokia. 

In 1983, he relocated to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna and oversaw the resident Hispanic ministry. 

He moved to St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro and was the parochial vicar for St. Joseph Hospital. 

In 1988, he went to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden, serving the Spanish ministry and he continued to serve the community until he became pastor in 1991.

In 2008, he went back to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna, serving as pastor until his passing. 

He was loved dearly by his family; one of his favorite quotes was “Jesus I Trust in You” “Jesús que en ti confío” 

Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna, with the Most Rev. Edward K. Braxton, Ph.D. STD, as principal celebrant. 

The Rosary was said in Spanish at 8 p.m. Friday. The Rosary was said in English at 10 a.m. Saturday. 

Interment was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cobden.
