Rev. Dr. Carl F. Dunker

Rev. Dr. Carl F. Dunker, 92, of Asheboro, N.C., and formerly of Cairo, died peacefully at his home on March 7, 2022.

Dr. Dunker was born on Nov. 27, 1929, in Cairo, the son of Harry Joseph and Lavonia Dunker. 

He was a 1947 graduate of Cairo High School. He was a 1953 graduate of Greenville University and a 1956 graduate of Butler University, earning his MA in 1957. In 1990, he earned his PhD from International Bible College and continued his graduate work at Duke Divinity School and UNC-G. 

He preached his first sermon at Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in 1948. He served at multiple churches in Illinois and North Carolina through six decades until retiring in 1995 to Asheboro. 

After retiring, he continued to be active in the community YMCA, Senior Games, articles in Randolph Guide, part-time ministry to local churches and letters of ministry and updates to family and friends, the last being in December 2021.

Rev. Dr. Dunker is survived by his children, David Dunker of Asheboro, N.C., Barbara (Charles) Roe of Silver Spring, Md., and Steven (Gwyn) Dunker of New Bern, N.C.; grandchildren Mark (Angie) Dunker of Greensboro, N.C., Jason (Kisha) Dunker of Carolina Beach, N.C., and Sarah Dunker of New Bern; great-grandchildren Austin, Meredith and Peyton; brothers Jack Dunker of Vienna and Wilbur (Peggy) Dunker of Paducah; sisters Kay (Nick) Niestrath, Mary Jane (Randy) Edmonds of Anna and Judy Wadley of Mounds; and a special friend, Vickie Teague of Asheboro, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Joseph and Lavonia Dunker; his wife, Barbara Dunker; a sister, Shirley Dunker; and a brother, Joe Kenneth Dunker. 

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in Cairo, with the Rev. Doug Atkins officiating. Burial followed the service in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge.
