Patricia L. ‘Patty’ Smith

Patricia L. “Patty” Smith, 74, of Carterville, and formerly of Carbondale, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Nov. 24, 1943, in Bingham, the daughter of Darel and Mary Paddock Hayes.  

She married James E. Staff in April 1964. He died on Sept. 15, 1966. She later married Richard Smith on Dec. 28, 1967, and they shared 50 years together.

She graduated from Vandalia High School and then from cosmetology school. She opened her own beauty shop, Patty’s Parlor, and continued taking classes until she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University.  

She then became a cosmetology instructor at John A. Logan College at Carterville. She also was a platform artist for several different hair product companies.  

She was an avid tennis player and really enjoyed the company of her tennis buddies. She loved going to the movies and spending time with her family and friends.  

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carterville. Her faith and love for the Lord was steadfast.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Smith of Carterville; sons David T. (Beth) Smith of De Soto and James W. (Melanie) Smith of Cobden; a daughter, Susan R. (Tito) Goins of Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters Connie Grether of Vandalia and Jessica (David) Peyton of Vandalia; sisters-in-law Mary Hayes of Concord, N.C., Marilyn Roland, Janie (Walt) Vizino and Paula (Stan) Warden; five grandchildren, Mara, Ashley, Kayden, Samantha and Amanda; one great-granddaughter, McKinley; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by a brother, Frankie; by her first husband, James E. Staff; and by a son, Scott R. Smith.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at the First Baptist Church in Carterville.  

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Brad Harlow officiating. Inurnment will be at Boner Cemetery at a later date. 

Memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church in Carterville.
