Michael H. Maguire
Michael H. Maguire, 72, of Cape Girardeau, unexpectedly passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, at his home.
Michael was born on Feb. 3, 1952, in Greensburg, Ind., the son of Daniel and Mary Ann Koors Maguire. He was a 1970 graduate of Tipton High School in Tipton, Mo.
He and Sheila Hoss were married on April 19, 1980, in Chillicothe, Mo.
Michael was a “Double Domer” graduate of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology in 1974, Michael worked with VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), the Missouri Division of Youth Services in Boonville, Mo., and then a facility in Kansas City, Mo.
In 1984, Michael and Sheila moved to South Bend, Ind., and Michael went back to college at Notre Dame. While working toward his Juris Doctorate Degree, he worked at the Law Library, and in 1986, he graduated.
Shortly thereafter, the Maguire family moved to Cape Girardeau, where Michael practiced with the firms of Lowes and Drusch, Johnson & Montgomery, and Dan Finch. Later, he established his own practice, the Law Office of Michael Maguire, with an emphasis on general law.
Michael initiated his law career with honesty and integrity and was recognized for treating clients with dignity and respect. When a fellow colleague faced a personal or professional challenge, Michael was always supportive.
Michael’s all-time favorite hobby was reading, anything and everything, a trait that helped him through college and his profession.
As his children grew up, he enjoyed coaching their sports, often traveling with his son’s teams.
Michael often participated in Trivia nights in Cape County, often helping raise money for schools and organizations.
Michael’s affiliations included: Library Board member; Sadi; the original Cable Committee with the City of Cape Girardeau, and several legal organizations.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sheila Hoss Maguire of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, ESG Attorney Annise Maguire (grand-dog, Boo) of Paris, France; his brother, Dan (Julie) Maguire; niece Meghan Maguire (Danny Abbes); nephew Bryan (Alison) Maguire; half-brother Frank Schroeder (Traci) Jr.; nieces Rebekah (Acen) Carmichael, Madison (Chris) Montgomery and Eden Schroeder; nephew Levi Schroeder; step-siblings Chris (Pam) Schroeder, Robert (Ruth) Schroeder, Cathie Schroeder Stahlschmidt, Joan Schroeder Fairfax (John Crook), Timothy Schroeder, Fran Schroeder Adams and Damian Schroeder (Debbi Renz).
He was preceded in death by a son, Sean Maguire (May 27, 2009); his parents, Daniel and Mary Ann; his stepfather, Frank Schroeder Sr.; a step-sister, Margaret Schroeder (John) Casani; Sheila’s mother, Kathleen Aldridge Hoss (Quentin) Davis; and Sheila’s step-brother, Randy Davis.
The funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. The Rev. Donny Ford conducted the funeral service.
Sheila wishes to extend her thanks to her cousin, Arvel Aldridge of St. Louis, for his kindness in traveling to Cape Girardeau to help her.
Michael had a lifelong affection for animals, and the family has adopted several dogs and cats. Therefore, if considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary or the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
