Margaret F. Newton

Margaret F. Newton, 84, of Anna, died Friday, May 12, 2017, at her granddaughter’s home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on July 4, 1932, in Cairo, the daughter of Frank and Helen Willard Smith.

She married James I. Newton on May 8, 1948, in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2009.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn Kay Newton of Anna, James Leroy (Linda) Newton of Glendora, Calif., and Cathy Cobb of Anna; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Tim Sugget of Bloomfield, Mo.; four sisters, Helen Jo Lytle of Manteno, Nancy Guerrero of Pueblo West, Colo., Sue Henderson of Memphis, Tenn., and Pokey Smith of Cairo; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James I. Newton; a granddaughter, Tracey Lynn Boyer; a great-grandson, Thomas Matthew Genter; brothers Buddy Smith, Bob Smith, Herb Smith and Joe Smith; and a sister, Myrtle Wathens.

She started her family in Jonesboro and then migrated to East St. Louis for several years. Later, she settled in Elgin for over 30 years, and then she retired in Anna. She worked several jobs, but most of all she was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Anna Moose Lodge.

Funeral services for Mrs. Newton were at 1 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with Pastor Earnie Newton officiating. Interment was in the Jonesboro Cemetery.
