Larry Bates 'Kimosabe'

Larry Bates “Kimosabe,” 73, of Brownfield, died on Sept. 21, 2019, at home.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1945, in Metropolis, the son of Douglas and Helen Fowler Bates.

He served in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing and working on cars. He loved to travel and helping family and friends. He had fought cancer since May of 2018.

Survivors included his daughter, Tanna Sue Bates of Quincy; one grandson, Tyler Bates USAF Baltimore; two sisters, Sharon Orlowski of Portland, Ore., and Susan Shepard of Brownfield; two brothers, Bobby Gene “Leroy” Bates of Grantsburg and Jerry (April) Farris; a special nephew, Douglas A. (Wanda) Bates of Lake in the Hills; a niece, a nephew, many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ray Bates and Stephan Bates; and a sister-in-law, Carlene (Dale) Bates.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, today, at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville. Pastor Tommy Dutton will conduct the service. 

Burial will follow in the Reevesville Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by VFW Post No. 9227 and American Legion Post No. 719 of Golconda and the U.S. Navy funeral honors team.
