Larry ‘Joe’ Birkhead

Larry “Joe” Birkhead, 63, of rural Buncombe (the Mt. Pleasant community), died at 4:25 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

Joe, as he was known to family and friends, was born on May 25, 1960, at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo. He was the son of Larry Maurice Birkhead and Janet Jo Gillespie Birkhead.

He is survived by a son, Blaze Birkhead of Carbondale; daughters Cindi (Chip) Banks of Du Quoin and Aimie Taylor of Carbondale; grandchildren Tristan Taylor of Murphysboro, Jadyn (Natalie Knight) Taylor of Carbondale, Chad Carroll of Murray, Ky., and Raylee Carroll of Carbondale; a great-granddaughter, Nova; a sister, Debra Hess of the Mt. Pleasant community; and nieces Lottie Jo (Mark) Smith and Rebecca (Ian) Marx.

He was in death by his parents, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents.

He attended Shawnee Community College and earned certification as a welder. He was an owner/operator over-the-road truck driver. He also was a heavy equipment operator and dump truck driver.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley and shooting pool. He was a member of New Beginnings Community Church in Carbondale.

A graveside service honoring the life of Larry Joe Birkhead was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at McGinnis Cemetery, 8365 Illinois Route 146 E., Dongola. Pastor Mike Miller officiated. Interment followed.
