Julia ‘Jill’ Halterman

Julia (Jill) K. Lawrence Halterman, 61, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, Tenn., surrounded by friends and family.

She was born on Dec. 31, 1956, in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of Herman Clayton (HC) Lawrence and Elizabeth Ann Abernathy. 

She graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1975. She graduated summa cum laude from Greenville College with a bachelor of arts degree in biology in 1979.  She worked as a pulmonary lab tech in Herrin, specializing in black lung. 

Later, Jill attended the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Pharmacology and received a master’s degree in criminology.  

She served as a forensic scientist for the Illinois State Police Crime Lab in Springfield. During her employment at the lab, she helped to establish the Illinois State Police Crime Lab in Chicago. Jill testified as an expert witness in many trials during her tenure at the crime lab and, after 16 years, left the crime lab to become an attorney. 

In 2002, at 45 years of age, Jill graduated from the Southern Illinois University School of Law with a juris doctorate degree. During the same year, she passed the Illinois Bar Exam on her first attempt. Eventually, Jill worked for the State of Illinois, again in Springfield, as an attorney.

She married Tim Halterman in 2015 and spent her last years traveling with Tim, visiting the grandkids, going to the dog park with her beloved dog Zeus, and reading any book that caught her eye.

Survivors include her husband, Tim; two step-children, Corey (Leah) Halterman of Moscow, Idaho, and Paige (Steven) Ward of Burleson, Texas; eight grandchildren, Abigail, Lily, Eliana, Gideon, Peyton, Remington, Kale and Josiah; four brothers, Jack (Beverly) Lawrence of Winston-Salem, N.C., James “JC” (Mary) Lawrence of Jackson, Mo., Joseph “Joe” Lawrence of Nashville, Tenn., and Jonathan (Sherri) Lawrence of Clarksville, Tenn.; beloved nieces and nephews; and other relatives.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial and celebration of life gathering will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
