John Ray Childers

John Ray Childers, 90, of Washington, Ill., died at 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at Snyder Village Health Center in Metamora.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1930, in Union County, the son of Samuel Larkin and Inez Williams Childers. 

He married Dorothy Mae Lee in Piggott, Ark., on Oct. 7, 1950. She preceded him in death in 2017.

Surviving are his children, Terry L. (Dorothy) Childers and Pamela R. (Steve) Ristau; grandsons Benjamin Childers, Brian Childers and Kenneth Ristau; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Connie) Childers; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Childers; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Childers.

Mr. Childers worked for Caterpillar. He retired in April 1992 after 42 years of service. 

He was the ultimate victory gardener, always sharing his bounty. He also took great care in seeing that his backyard birds and squirrels were fed and watered all year long. 

Mr. Childers and his son, Terry, shared fond memories of their deer hunting expeditions in the Buncombe area. He was an avid story teller and enjoyed sharing tales of days gone by.

The family voiced special thanks to OSF Hospice and the staff at Snyder Village.

Inurnment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington, Ill. Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington is in charge of arrangements.
