Helen Kesler Sponsler

Helen Kesler Sponsler

Helen Sponsler, 97, of Anna, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Integrity Health Care in Anna.

She was born on Oct. 13, 1926, in Cairo, the daughter of Scott and Mildred Kesler. She is survived by brother Jack Kesler of Dongola.

She was preceded in death by husband Wright Burge; they had two children, Scotty (Vickie) Burge of Cobden and Brenda Day of Anna. She also was preceded in death by husband Darrell Porterfield and Elmer “Bud” Sponsler and son-in-law Richard Day.

She had three grandchildren, Jamia (Chris) Pace of Nashville, Tenn., Justin (Steve Huey) Day of Marion and Christy (Chris) Norton of Cookeville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Austin (Sabrina) Norton of Franklin, Tenn., and Alexa (Jose and Chase) Barrientos of Simi Valley, Calif.; and three great-great-grandchildren, Ellie, Evelyn and Eliza Norton of Franklin, Tenn.

In her younger years, she worked at Murphy’s and at the Florsheim Shoe Factory in Anna and later retired from Anna Junior High School as the head cook in the lunchroom. She always loved and talked about the kids who helped her serve and set the cafeteria for lunch every day; as many kids will still remember to this day. How good the food was she made.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Anna. She served as the Worthy Matron for the Eastern Star and was a lifelong member of the Anna VFW Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 Ladies Auxiliary, where she served in many roles through the years. She enjoyed so much helping and cooking at the VFW Post for many hometown events for our veterans.

Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family, cooking and hanging out with her favorite granddaughter Jamia. She loved to travel with friends and to play the slots from time to time. Her zest for life and laughter will always remind her family and friends why she was just the best to be around. She made life fun and enjoyed every minute. We will all miss her terribly and will see her again someday.

Graveside funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Christian Chapel Cemetery in Dongola, with Pastor Tim Gossett officiating. Interment immediately followed.
