Fred E. Cavaness

Fred E. Cavaness, 89, of Grand Tower, died Sunday, May 8, 2016, at St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1927, the son of Homer and Hazel Nimmo Cavaness in Grand Tower.

He married Wilma Norton in 1951. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2000.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He retired in 1989 from the power plant in Grand Tower after 40-plus years of faithful service. He loved to play washers, to golf and fish.

He was a member of the Elks Club in Murphysboro.

He is survived by his sons, Steven Cavaness of Grand Tower, Honorable Charles (Dona) Cavaness of Jonesboro and Dan (Carrie) Cavaness of Carterville; grandsons Allen Cavaness of Jonesboro and Noah Cavaness of Carterville; a sister, Jeanette Wilson of Granite City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and several brothers and sisters.

As per his wishes, there will be no services.

Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
