Elaine Jodene Porterfield

Elaine Jodene Porterfield, 86, of Dongola, died at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at The Anchor in Marion.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1934, in Dongola, the daughter of Russell Henry and Helen L. Hinkle McCommons.  

She married Franklin Delano “Barney” Porterfield on March 6, 1955.  He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 2017.

Mrs. Porterfield worked for the Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative for over 40 years.  

She was a 1952 graduate of Dongola High School.  She enjoyed genealogy, reading and cooking.  

She was very caring and giving and proudly sent care packages for enlisted troops.  

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Eastern Star.  She also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dongola for over 70 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan Porterfield of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Patricia Beggs of Anna; special children Kyle and Cynthia Kern of Dongola; special grandchildren Erica (Jacob) Poat and Gracen Kern, both of Dongola; special great-grandchildren Carson and Aubrey Jo Poat, both of Dongola; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barney Porterfield; and a sister, Betty McCommons.

Visitation was from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola.  Groups of 10 people at a time were allowed in to pay their respects.  

Private services for the family will be held later at Christian Chapel Cemetery in Dongola, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating.  Interment will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery in Dongola.

Memorials can be made to the Christian Chapel Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home.
