Dr. Bill L. Goodman

Bill Goodman, 93, of Makanda, died on the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, at Union County Hospital Long Term Care in Anna.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1930, in Pauls Valley, Okla., the son of William W. Goodman and Zola L. Phillips Goodman. 

He married Joy B. Elkins of Sulfur, Okla., on Sept. 8, 1951.

He attended Oklahoma A & M and received a bachelor of science degree in 1951 and a master of science degree in 1953. He earned a Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1959. 

He moved to Illinois in 1958 and taught for 32 years at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He was a professor in animal science specializing in poultry science and genetics. He led and trained the SIUC poultry judging team, winning many awards and championships.

He was a tremendous example of a kind, selfless, humble, generous person, who never wanted to burden anyone. 

He was an excellent teacher who truly cared about his students, and an avid gardener and baker, well known for his beautiful tomatoes and delicious sour-dough bread. 

He enjoyed bird-watching, finding morel mushrooms, fishing and hunting. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family. He will be dearly missed, but we know he is in his eternal home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his four sons, Phil (Connie) Goodman of Jonesboro, Mark (Kathy) Goodman of Paducah, Ron (Cherie) Goodman of Ramsey, Ind., and Anthony Goodman of Jonesboro; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joy; a daughter, Barbara (Keith) Lay; a grandson, Brandon Lay; a brother, Clifford Goodman; and a sister, Dorothy Blackwell.

Funeral services were at noon Monday, Jan. 30, at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Harner and Pastor Darryl Williams officiated. Entombment was in Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Cemetery.

Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro was in charge of arrangements.
