Bill Darnell

Bill Darnell, 74, of Dongola, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, under compassionate care with family at his side.

He was born on March 4, 1944, in Chicago Heights, the son of Adolphus William and Erma Johnson Darnell Sr.  

He married Shirley Kelley on Sept. 26, 1964, and shared 53 years together.

He had worked in plant maintenance for Oil Dri in Mounds for 24 years. He had been a member of the former Dongola Church of Christ. 

He served for three years in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany for one year and in Vietnam for two years.

Mr. Darnell is survived by his wife, Shirley Darnell of Dongola; a daughter, Lucinda Hancock of Jonesboro; a son, William Todd Darnell of Dongola; a granddaughter, Lilly Hancock of Jonesboro; a brother, Bob and wife Donna Darnell of Corryton, Tenn.; nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Darnell; and his grandmother, Gladys Johnson.

Funeral services for Mr. Darnell were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, with the Rev. Buddy Walls officiating. 

Interment was in Cypress Cemetery, with military honors by area veterans and the Illinois National Guard.
