Betty L. Smith-Norton
Betty L. Smith-Norton, 90, of Cobden, died Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at Union County Long Term Care in Anna.
She was born on Dec. 29, 1928, in Cobden, the daughter of Sherman and Maude Smith Smith.
She married Jake Norton on April 21, 1950, in Cobden. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1972.
She is survived by nieces and nephews Susan and Jeff Forby of Cobden, Deanna Smith of Cobden, Jim (Joan) Smith of Carterville and Duane Smith of Wolf Lake; many great-nieces and nephews; other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Norton; an infant son, Richard W. Norton; brothers Jackie Dale Smith and Clyde Smith; and a sister-in-law, Geneva Smith.
She was a very active and loyal member of Immanuel Praise and Worship Center in Cobden. She taught Sunday School and would make many delicious pies for the chicken and dumpling dinners at the church.
In 1951 she and her husband moved to Dixon where she worked for 29 years for the Dixon State School as the head supervisor in dietary. Years later she moved back to Cobden to enjoy her retirement.
Graveside funeral services for Betty L. Norton will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, today, at the Cobden Cemetery, with Pastor Carl Dillow officiating. Interment will follow. Everyone attending is asked to go directly to the cemetery.
