Wreaths Across America Day ceremony slated

Local volunteers are working hard to ensure that all of the veterans who have been laid to rest at the Mound City National Cemetery are honored in December on National Wreaths Across America Day.

This year, ceremonies are planned simultaneously across the country at more than 1,200 locations on Saturday, Dec. 16, in observance of National Wreaths across America Day.

Organizers note that the goal is to place a live, balsam fir wreath at the headstone of every veteran who is buried at the national cemetery in Mound City.

Achieving the goal is part of an effort to spread patriotism while also commemorating the ultimate sacrifices veterans made for the country.

From now through Nov. 26, sponsorships are being accepted for wreaths which are needed to honor every veteran at the Mound City National Cemetery. Each wreath sponsorship costs $15.

“Every donation and wreath sponsorship is a meaningful gift from an appreciative supporter who knows what it means to serve and sacrifice for all the freedoms we enjoy,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America.

“We are so grateful to the Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission for participating in our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.”

Remember, Honor, Teach is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at the Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,200 veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.

Information about sponsoring a wreath at the Mound City National Cemetery can be found online at moundcitynationalcemetery.org.
